This event is FREE and is open to individuals of all skill levels involved or interested in advancing civil rights for Transgender people in California. Update as of February 21st, the online registration for the Summit is full. Anyone who registers on-line after the 21st will be placed on a waiting list in case more space becomes available. 2007 California Transgender Leadership Summit Plenary Descriptions
Opening Plenary: Bringing the Movement Home March 23 rd , 7-8:30 pm, Topping Student Center (USC) We've been witness to huge changes in the transgender movement in the last five years. The panelists, each a local, statewide, or national leader, will highlight some of those changes and offer their unique visions for where the movement could or should go next. Panelists will engage with the audience in an open question and answer period and will also help the audience map community assets from around the state. Lunch Plenary: Young, Transgender, and Proud March 24 th , 12:30 1:30, Topping Student Center (USC) What is it like to be young and transgender? This panel of transgender youth from around the state will discuss their lives, their goals, and the expectations for the future. What can the movement be doing to better address the needs of youth? How has the work we've been doing over the last decades shaped their lives in ways we couldn't have imagined? Have lunch, get inspired, get informed about the lives of five transgender youth from different parts of California. Panelists (for privacy reasons, only the panelists' first names are being disclosed): Angel Moderator: Danielle Castro, Community Health Partnership, Santa Clara County Keynote Plenary: Transgender Rights, Transgender Lives March 25 th , 11- 1pm, Tapper Hall of Humanities, Room 101, USC All available data demonstrates that when people know more about transgender people they are more likely to support anti-discriminatory policies and laws. How do we effectively talk about our lives and the lives of people in our families? Panelists will share lessons they've learned about what works and what doesn't work in talking to people about the lives and needs of the transgender community. Leadership Track: Activists Healing Ourselves
This workshop addresses the many forms of pain we experience in just trying to live and the equal forms of healing and redemption available to us as we move to the realm of activist. It is essential that we have some healing before we open ourselves up to public scrutiny and the demands of being involved in social justice. This workshop will be beneficial to the seasoned activist as well as the newly acknowledged activist. Come learn how to make healing a vital and vibrant part of your activism!
Community Track: Community Organizing
This workshop will use Los Angeles's Community Clinics Campaign as a backdrop to examine community organizing principles and definitions. Participants will discuss some key issues including: indentifying your constituency; issue campaigns; organizing plans; and, campaign plans. And will take home some skills and ideas for building or strengthening a campaign and strategy to organize for social change!
Organizational Development Track: Building an Organization
Do you have a great idea? Do you see a need that isn't being fulfilled in the community? How can you create an organization to further your idea or meet that need? This workshop focuses on key building blocks to creating a relevant and sustainable organization.

Leadership Track: Maturing as Leaders
Maturing as Leaders wants Y-O-U. All of you. Bring your heart and soul to a facilitated discussion where we will share our challenges and successes as leaders and shine a light on how our experiences have contributed to our personal maturity and the maturing of our leadership style.
Community Track: Media 101
The cameras are rolling. Are you ready? What does it take to be a community spokesperson? How can you prepare yourself, your organization, and your allies to successfully work with the media to get your message out? This fun, interactive workshop will get participants ready to move beyond the off-the-cuff interview into planning out and sticking to key talking points in any interview.
Organizational Development Track: Introduction to Strategic Planning
This workshop will go over the nuts and bolts of creating a strategic plan for a non-profit group for the purposes of activism, community awareness, or support of the transgender community. Panelists will cover the steps for identifying and setting mission, vision, values, and goals. Learn some great strategies to getting your organization off to the right start or to restart one that is in a bit of a rut. 4- 5:45
Leadership Track: Leadership Development
From organizing events to changing the law; what are necessary skills to lead a successful movement? Five panelists will share insights of community building and lessons learned.
Community Track: Using New Media
It's all about YouTube and so much more. Never before have activists had as many ways to shape our own messages and create our own media. This workshop will provide you with insights into what is new and emerging in the world of media so that you'll be better prepared to get online and get your message out.
Organizational Development Track: Leading Outside the Movement "Leading Outside of the Movement" will focus on how we, as transgender people, can get involved in issues that are not specifically transgender related thereby increasing our visibility, viability, credibility and acceptance. This session will focus on ways to let our skills, talents and personalities shine through as we get involved in everyday issues thereby letting society see, hear and feel who we are and what we are made of. Our panel will advise current and future transgender leaders on the best ways to lead outside the movement.

The Summit does not have an official hotel. For that reason, here are two options that people utilized last year. The first is a hotel right next to the University of Southern California, a close distance to all Summit events. The second is a way to save costs on hotels that are a short drive from the campus. Radisson Mid-Town The average cost of a room is about $140 a night. We are trying to get a small discount on rooms. Check back with us to see if we’ve been able to secure one. Priceline For those of you who are unfamiliar with Priceline, it’s an online travel site that allows you to get discounted rates at many different hotels. When looking at Los Angeles on the site, check for hotels in the Downtown Los Angeles category. To get the best deals, you’ll need to use the bid option. This option does not allow you to pick the actual hotel where you’ll stay, but does allow you to pick the quality of the hotel and the area. For instance, last year, some people were able to get nice 3 star rooms for $65 a night. Prices seem to have increased since then, but you should still be able to get a deal. If you decide to use the bid option, we recommend starting out using at least 3 stars and expecting to bid somewhere in the $75 - $90 a night range. For more information on bidding, look here:

Sunday, 1:30pm 3:30pm What's up in LA? Presented by FTM Alliance of LA and LOTUS Want to talk about the latest work being done in Los Angeles's transgender communities? Have you heard about C3 and want more details? Want to discuss how different communities are working together on exciting and fun projects? This is that place. FTM Alliance and LOTUS sponsor a two hour, facilitated discussion about what is going on in LA. Everyone is encouraged to talk about the work they're doing or know about, brainstorm ways that different projects can support each other, and offer insights about how work can be bumped up to the next level.
