Transgender Law Center is seeking a full-time staff person to coordinate the Trans Advocacy Network (.5 FTE) and support Transgender Law Center programs (.5 FTE).

About Trans Advocacy Network (TAN)

Founded in 2010, the Trans Advocacy Network (TAN) is an alliance of transgender organizations that work at the state and local level, coming together to build a stronger trans movement by facilitating the sharing of resources, best practices, and organizing strategies. TAN is coordinated by a volunteer Steering Committee with Transgender Law Center serving as the fiscal sponsor.

About Transgender Law Center

Transgender Law Center works to change law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression. We are looking for an energetic, motivated, and mission-oriented Program Manager to help create and execute programs that increase access to healthcare and economic stability; advance racial and gender justice; expand the rights and wellbeing of trans communities; and promote the leadership and engagement of trans and gender non-conforming people.

The Coordinator will join a team of passionate, smart, and dedicated individuals who work hard, laugh easily, and are eager to learn and grow together as we change the world. The position is based in Oakland, California.

The position will be divided into two parts, with 50% of staff time dedicated to coordinating the Trans Advocacy Network.

TAN responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate TAN website, wiki, member only section of website, and other technology including use of webinar and conference call technologies;
  • Develop and coordinate Trans Advocacy Network Membership drive;
  • Outreach to local and state trans activists about TAN and build relationships with local, state, and national transgender and allied activists/organizations;
  • Prepare TAN curriculum and materials for upload to TAN website and webinar technology;
  • Coordinate office needs, scheduling, and support the work of TAN, including logistics for Steering Committee meetings and member convenings;
  • Draft statements, press releases, and new media content to publicize policy and legislative advancements on the state and federal level;
  • Research and track progress of relevant legislation and policy that address the issues and needs of transgender and gender non-conforming youth, adults, and families in federal, local, or state governments;
  • Manage member listserves and assist with providing information and resources to members.
  • Others duties as assigned.


Transgender Law Center responsibilities include:

  • Assist in developing strategic responses to emerging and ongoing local, state, and national policy issues, including health care access, economic justice, racial justice, student safety, prisoners’ rights, and immigrants’ rights.
  • Manage and execute programmatic efforts to improve access to health care, economic justice, racial justice, and education for transgender people.
  • Conduct and develop trainings on transgender civil rights for various audiences, including equality advocates, employers and policymakers.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to employers and social service agencies interested in improving policies for trans workers.
  • Support the development of community-facing public education materials, including ‘know your rights’ materials and training curricula.
  • Support programmatic events, including the Transgender Leadership Summit and Advocacy Day.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships and coalitions with transgender groups, organizational partners, and community leaders.
  • Speak publicly about transgender policy issues at community events, conferences, and other venues.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrable cultural competency in working with transgender communities.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a paid or volunteer position advocating for the rights of transgender people or other underserved communities.
    • Experience in racial justice and/or trans justice advocacy and movement building.
    • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clearly, speak in public, and facilitate large and small meetings, including via conference calls and webinars. Demonstrated experience tailoring messages to different types of audiences is also necessary.
      • Experience conducting trainings tailored to different audiences.
      • Ability to manage website design, experience with website editing and content development.
      • Commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to social change.
        • Ability to self-motivate, self-direct, and manage multiple projects simultaneously as well as a commitment to teamwork and a sense of humor.
        • Attention to detail.
        • Plays well with others.
        • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Word Press, Wiki, and social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook.
          • Ability to travel as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in program planning and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and quickly gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including board and staff members, donors, foundation and civic leaders, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Experience creating publications that explain information in easily understood language.
  • Experience creating and implementing media campaigns to support growing the TAN membership.
  • Experience with fundraising and development

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary range: $35,000-$45,000
Anticipated start date: August/September 2013

Salary is commensurate with experience and will include Transgender Law Center employee benefits, including medical and dental; matched retirement savings; three weeks’ vacation; and sabbatical program.
