Today, Fusion published the powerful first part of a 6 month investigation into abuse of transgender women in immigration detention. Former Transgender Law Center client Barbra Perez courageously described being tortured in solitary confinement based solely on her gender identity: “When you’re in solitary confinement it starts to break you down.” The report describes that while only 1 out of every 500 people in immigration detention is transgender, a shocking 1 out of every 5 survivors of confirmed sexual abuse in ICE detention are transgender women including multiple instances of assaults by guards.
