Transgender Law Center expresses our condolences to the family and friends of Eric Garner. We are outraged by the grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo of the New York City Police Department.  Too often, people of color are subjected to institutional violence including profiling, harassment, and assault by police officers.

According to the national survey, Injustice at Every Turn, 38% of black transgender people reported harassment by the police they interacted with, 14% reported physical assault, and 6% reported sexual assault by the police.  It is not surprising that 51% of the black transgender community feels unsafe seeking police assistance.

We invite all communities who have experienced institutional discrimination to join us to call for positive change and justice.
