Legislators in Tennessee today effectively killed HB 2414, a dangerous bill that would have required K-12 schools and higher education institutions to exclude transgender students from using the restroom that matches the gender they live as every day. The House Education Administration and Planning Committee sent HB 2414 to a summer study committee, meaning that it will not be passed in this session at least.
The bipartisan decision came after a transgender high school student spoke at the hearing about her experiences in school, testimony which seemed to greatly impact the legislators and tone of the discussion. You can watch video from the hearing, including her testimony, below.
Transgender Law Center congratulates local advocates who worked hard to defeat the bill, including the Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition, Tennessee Equality Project, the ACLU of Tennessee, and lots of individuals who spoke out and shared their stories.
Good work, Tennessee!
