Transgender Law Center (TLC), the largest national trans-led organization advocating for a world in which all people are free to define themselves and their futures, today announced that longtime trans movement leader Bran Fenner has joined the organization in the new position of Director of People and Organizational Culture. This position will lead investment in TLC staff, organizational practices and culture as TLC grows and continues with a commitment to racial equity and centering strategies to address anti-blackness.
“We are thrilled to welcome Bran to TLC, especially in this critical new role for the organization,” said Kris Hayashi, executive director of Transgender Law Center. “The staff of Transgender Law Center have consistently and lovingly challenged the organization to live up to its values, and the creation of this position is a direct result. For several years now, as we have rapidly grown, TLC has been reflecting on the organizational culture we need to sustain ourselves and the movement. Especially in this moment of heightened attack and crisis, our movements must invest meaningfully in the wellness of our people doing this work, equitable structures and practices, and combatting the anti-Blackness, racism, misogyny, and ableism that too often poison our organizations. We look forward to continuing our journey of organizational change with Bran at our side.”
Bran has been a leader in the nonprofit sector for over 20 years. He cofounded FIERCE, an organization for LGBTQ youth of color and homeless youth, and has worked as a trainer, curriculum developer, and a nurse.
“As a former community organizer, co-director, and non-profit consultant I have seen and experienced how misalignment in work culture can erode the effectiveness of an organization, bring work promised to communities to a halt, and lead people to completely detach from movement work,” said Bran. “I am so excited about the people who make up TLC, and the ways they are intentionally building trans movement nationally. I am honored to support bringing that same intentionality to the culture of the organization itself, and to be a part of this moment in the TLC’s history.”
