The shutdown of the federal government could have a disproportionate impact on transgender Americans, a population that continues to face extraordinary barriers in accessing employment, health care, and basic safety.

Transgender people  face high rates of workplace discrimination. Investigations into workplace discrimination will be delayed. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will continue to accept complaints of discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression, but will not have the staff to carry out investigations until funding is restored.  In a case brought by Transgender Law Center, the EEOC ruled in 2012 that transgender and gender nonconforming Americans are protected from discrimination under Title VII.

Other delays including paychecks for government workers, nutritional programs, etc. will also impact transgender Americans.
