The Trans Incarcerated Survivor Advocacy Network addresses the needs of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people who have experienced sexual violence while incarcerated. The program will train and support a network of volunteer advocates to:
- address the non-legal needs of individuals
- assist with grievances
- document experiences of TGNC individuals and advocates with the grievance system
- file litigation to expand constitutional protections
- address the gaps in current policies that addresses prison rape
The ultimate aim of this project is to provide advocacy packets that can be used by both incarcerated individuals, and individuals on the outside to address the diversity of needs faced by individuals who experience sexual violence while in custody. The research and arguments developed in the course of non-litigation remedies and impact litigation can be used as a model in future legal challenges to advance the constitutional rights of TGNC survivors of sexual abuse in prison.
The Trans Incarcerated Survivor Advocacy Network is housed at Transgender Law Center and led by Whitney Washington, Equal Justice Works Fellow sponsored by Uber Technologies, Inc. and Littler Mendelson, PC.
