People come from all corners of the world to live the California Dream. We come here seeking opportunities to work and to live in a safe and comfortable home. We come to California to live as our authentic selves.
Unfortunately, far too often, discrimination denies the fulfillment of that dream for transgender people and others who don’t neatly fit neatly into gender stereotypes. That discrimination affects our physical and economic security by denying us opportunities from basic housing to gainful employment, from health care to safety on the streets. At times, the prejudice we encounter is literally life threatening.
Current California laws protect people from discrimination based on gender identity and expression, but the law is often unclear. In fact, in The State of Transgender California, we found that 67% of transgender workers experienced some form of discrimination on the job, but only 15% of those people filed a complaint. To address this, Assemblymember Toni Atkins has introduced The Gender Nondiscrimination Act (AB 887). The Gender Nondiscrimination Act, co-sponsored by the Transgender Law Center and Equality California, will strengthen existing protections for transgender and gender non-conforming Californians by establishing gender identity and gender expression as their own categories in our non-discrimination laws. Transforming the law is vital to reducing ignorance, bigotry and bullying so that we may all live safe and fulfilling lives.
California has great laws for transgender people. Now it’s time to make them meaningful in our lives. It’s time to fulfill the California Dream. Join us as we take a stand for full equality at Transgender Advocacy Day.
