What you need to know
Immigration Enforcement
Since returning to the White House, President Trump has issued many ‘executive actions.’ The full impact of these executive actions is uncertain and their effects continue to unfold. TLC will continue to analyze the executive actions and track important developments. It is important to remember: executive actions do not change the law. At the same time, we know that these actions embolden people across the country (inside and outside of government) to persecute and harass transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people.
Transgender and nonbinary people deserve safety in our communities.
The executive action that seeks to Expand Immigration Enforcement and Prosecutions, and Threaten “Sanctuary” Communities intends to increase mass deportation efforts; requests the immediate identification and registration of migrants without status in the United States; and expands expedited removal, which allows the federal government to deport someone without a court hearing. In the executive action, the President requests that no work permits or public benefits, like food assistance or healthcare, be granted to people living in the United Stated without specific paperwork. The executive action threatens to revoke federal funding from “sanctuary cities” and “sanctuary states” and demands cooperation with state and local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration law.
Immediate Impacts
This executive action has already led to an increase in ICE raids in our communities, and of community members being detained. The executive action reinforces requirements for undocumented immigrants to register with the federal government, increasing fear and anxiety among targeted communities.
Reports
This is a series of explainers of the executive actions issued in the early days of the second Trump administration. This is not legal advice. The information contained in this explainer is as up-to-date and accurate as possible on the date of publication but the implementation of the executive actions and other circumstances are constantly evolving.
