What you need to know
U.S. Southern Border
In the first days of his second administration, President Trump issued many executive actions. While we don’t yet know the full impact of these actions, Transgender Law Center will continue to closely analyze the Executive Orders and their progression. It’s important to remember: executive actions do not change the law. At the same time, we know that these actions will embolden people across the country to persecute and harass transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people.
Transgender and nonbinary people deserve to find and stay in homes where we are safe from persecution and violence.
The executive action that seeks to End Asylum and Deny Entry at the Southern Border Based on a Fake “Invasion” attempts to close the southern border by pausing all non-citizens from entering the United States across the southern border. This executive action also demands action be taken to repel or remove anyone attempting to cross the southern border.
The executive action that seeks to Detain All Migrants and Cut Off Access to the Asylum Process orders the construction of physical walls along the southern border. This executive action also calls for an increased presence of border patrol agents. The executive action makes it clear that the Trump Administration intends to detain and forcefully remove people without documentation whom they suspect of committing a crime.
Immediate Impacts
The US-Mexico border has been closed, leaving migrants and asylum seekers in a dangerous limbo. The “CBP One” app, an app that made it possible to schedule appointments with US Customs and Border protections, has been shut down.
