In a strongly worded letter to North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, the U.S. Department of Justice has demanded that North Carolina remedy HB2’s violations of federal law by Monday — or lose millions of dollars in federal funding. The letter comes after several LGBT legal groups, including Transgender Law Center, urged the federal government to make it clear that HB2 violates federal law.
As the letter explains, HB2 violates Title VII, which protects transgender employees from discrimination, as well as Title IX, which protects students from discrimination based on sex, including gender identity.
According to the letter, McCrory has until Monday to assure the Department of Justice “that the State will not comply with or implement HB2.”
