(Washington, D.C.) – On Thursday, May 23rd, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement (Familia), Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP), and Transgender Law Center along with Human Rights Campaign, Center for American Progress, Lambda Legal, and National Center for Transgender Equality will hold a press conference to commemorate Roxsana Hernandez.
On May 25, 2019, it will be one year since Roxsana, a trans woman and asylum-seeker from Honduras, died while in U.S. immigration enforcement custody. Since her death, the organizations gathered have pushed for #JusticeforRoxsana, with Transgender Law Center and the Law Office of R. Andrew Free pursuing legal relief on behalf of Roxsana’s family and Familia and BLMP supporting community organizing efforts across the country calling for an end to detention for LGBTQ migrants.
In remembrance of Roxsana, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement members in seven cities will organize events as part of a week of action from May 27 to June 2 to demand accountability from the different agencies that played a potential role in her death.
The press conference will take place after a congressional briefing on centering LGBTQ migrants within the immigrant rights narrative.
